Wands at the Ready

Hello there! I have layout to share with you using the Very Squarey cut file. This layout was inspired by a 6"x6" paper pad. I wanted to use as many patterns from it as possible, and was looking for a file that would be great for featuring the designs. Very Squarey was perfect!

I backed some of the squares with paper, and left others blank. I love the look of white on white! I used the Shimelle Starshine collection and a photo of my wand and I at the Harry Potter theme park! I added bold title with thickers and some ephemera, but kept the embellishing on the simpler side.

I love the way it turned out! Thank you for joining me, I hope you have a great day!

Boys Will Be Boys

Hey there!  It's Katrina from Paper, Scissors and Glue to share a layout using the Very Squarey background file and a cut from the Boys Rule set. I wanted to do something different than just place pattern paper behind openings in the background file.  I think I accomplished that!

I actually used the 8.5 x 11 file and sized it to fit my layout from top to bottom.  By doing this it didn't distort the squares as much and also left me room on the sides. Then I started filling those little squares up after I figured out my photo placement.  I had all these little bits and pieces that came with the Totally Rad collection from Cocoa Vanilla that were perfect for me to fill spots with!

I then decided I need to add a touch more black, so I cut out the "RAD" from the Boys Rule file. I added some enamel dots from the collection to decorate up the cut file. I love how it looks with the layout!

This file is also available as a pre-cut file, where you would just received the die cut pieces.  A great option if you do not have a digital die cutting machine.

Thanks for stopping by the blog today!  Have a great Friday!

Social Media?

Happy Monday Cut Shoppe friends! I'm here with a favorite background from The Cut Shoppe Etsy store, the Very Squarey cut file which includes both 12x12 and 8.5x11 sizes:

The title of this page is a bit tongue-in-cheek, and pokes fun at the five cousins in the photo below. It's Christmas day and there they are, sitting side by side, totally engrossed in what is on the devices in front of them. Maybe they are communicating by text?! ;)

I thought that the Very Squarey cut file would be perfect for my background, with the squares representing the many screens (laptops, smart phones, ipads, etc.) that sometimes seem to take the place of face-to-face conversations. Adding snippets of text was an afterthought, but totally appropos.

Although I could have gone my favorite route, all out colorful, when backing the cuts, I thought monochromatic would be a better option. A somewhat busy black and white photo certainly didn't need the competition!

Many of the same papers were repeated in the center for my all-in-one photo/title/journaling mat, which corrals the aforementioned elements, preventing them from getting lost on my page.

The question remains. When having a family gathering, should we put a basket by the door with a sign that says "Deposit all phones HERE!"? What do you think? ;)

I started my layout with the Very Squarey 8.5x11 background cut file, and enlarged it a bit in Silhouette Studio.  Then I removed some of the squares from the bottom portion of the cut file.  Next I cut it from a Black & White striped paper, and removed the paper from the mat once it was cut, leaving the squares on the mat.  I placed the die cut piece over my background paper and traced some of the square shapes, so I could stitch them with embroidery floss.  Then I placed some of the patterned paper squares from the mat back in place, by using the 12x12 cut piece as a stencil.

The Cut Shoppe is giving away a $25.00 Gift Certificate!  A random winner will be announced on the Blog on November 6th, along with the cut file winners from each of the Design Team members' Blogs.

The Great Apple Harvest

Laura today, bringing you some Fall fun. As soon as I saw the the Very Squarey file I knew I had to make a stencil from it! I love the mix of squares and that they aren't perfectly laid out, but a bit wonky. I'm all about the wonky. I think it's interesting.

To start off, I placed my newly cut stencil on a piece of watercolor paper and applied heavy gel medium over the entire area. Let dry (I place mine in my oven on warm, but you could let air dry.) then mist with spray inks (I used one color at a time). Once the color is on the page, mist with a spray bottle filled with water. The gel acts as a resist and the ink will wash off or wash lighter, leaving the pattern to pop out of the color. I then took some markers, of the same colors, and traced around some of the boxes. A little splattering of the darker ink finished off the background.

Since the background is so bright and attention grabbing, I didn't need to add much else. I used the Fall In Line Alpha at the main part of my title, adding small letter stickers for the supporting bit of the title. I only needed a few additional embellishments, some enamel dots and a couple of things from the We Are Family from Simple Stories. I loved the letters from the Fall In Line Alpha! I decided to ink with the same colors as I used on my background, only in reverse order, then added black outlines to help them stand out.
